CHEESE-FONDUE IGLOO, Adelboden, Switzerland

Loading

OMG! It was an incredible experience, sitting in Europe’s largest igloo – seating 200 guests in rooms of various sizes and with different decorations of ice sculptures or reliefs made directly in the ice-cold snow walls. The fondue-igloo is built on Engstligenalp at a height of 1964 meters high above Adelboden. The easiest access is by cable car from Unter dem Birg about 4 km from Adelboden. It is recommended to book in advance. There were actually a lot of guests, it seemed the igloo was full of excited people wanting to enjoy the delicious cheese fondue. There is no choice, there is only the best, a special mix from cheesemaker Manfred Schmid in Adelboden. Of course, we wanted to enjoy the full package so we ordered side dishes, pickled onions, and small potatoes, as supplement to the bread. A lovely Johannisberg white wine from Chevaliers in Wallis and some tea rounded it all up. It was all delicious, and the atmosphere in the igloo, with candle lights on the tables, warm sheepskins and carpets on the benches was very cozy. Maggie also enjoyed the cheese and everything else – don’t forget an extra carpet if you also bring your dog.

Before entering the igloo we had enough time to enjoy the spectacular snowy landscape of Engstligenalp. There are many hiking paths, also for snow shoe walking, and lots of other activities like snow tubing, ice climbing, and ski schools. The huge waterfall, Engstligen Falls, with an exciting fixed rope route, can also be reached from the mountain station. To us, having cheese fondue in an igloo has now turned into a tradition!
